This week the famous Alcan 5000 rally will start in Kirkland, Washington. This year the Alcan 5000 rally will be a winter rally. And February in northern Canada and in Alaska will guarantee that it will be a winter rally with lots of winter. The rally will end on March 4, 2016 some 4,500 miles later in Anchorage, Alaska. While most of the competitors are from the Pacific northwest area, there are entrants from around the world who have signed up to take on the challenge of competing in such a winter rally. Competitors are coming from as far away as New Zealand and South Africa. The complete entry list is shown below.

This year I have been in contact with Tim Burgess of Toronto who will be navigating for Keith Barke in a Audi Quattro. Tim will be sending me some stories from the rally which I look forward to receiving. Tim competed in the last Alcan 5000 in 2014 in his Triumph TR4 when the Alcan 5000 was a summer rally. In recent years, the Alcan 5000 is held every two years, alternating between being a summer or a winter rally.

This should be an interesting event for the competitors. I hope that everyone has a safe rally. Getting caught out in the Arctic cold can make for a very unpleasant day or night. Maybe even both.
