2018 Dakar Day 6: Peterhansel Settles In

Day 6 of 2018 Dakar is in the books and it seems like today there was no major drama at the front of the car class field. Day 6 had 447km of liaison or transit distance (shown in green below) and 313km of timed stage (shown in red below).  The route has taken the competitors from Peru into Bolivia.

Day 6 Route

The profile of the Day 6 route is shown below.  The direction of travel along the profile is from left to right.  While the timed stage is long, from an elevation change perspective it does not look particularly daunting.

Day 6 Profile

Today’s stage winner was Carlos Sainz who finished about 4 minutes ahead of his Peugeot teammate, Stephane Peterhansel.  I believe that Dakar favorite, Stephane Peterhansel  would call today’s stage quite successful.  Merely losing 4 minutes to Sainz while not having to take any risks by pushing would likely be considered by Peterhansel as an acceptable risk/reward scenario at this time of the Dakar rally.

After the stage Peterhansel said: “For sure, it was completely different. The tracks are easier. It’s easy navigation. The main problem is altitude for the driver and for the engine. We lost a lot of power and we lost concentration – you know, the brain also works in slow motion, so it was a little bit complicated. But today for me it was like a transition. We took no risks at all to finish the stage, just to arrive in a good position in La Paz”.

While Peterhansel lost 4 minutes to Sainz, he essentially held station with his remaining competitors.
