2018 Dakar Day 5: Another Significant Day

Yesterday I said that it was a significant day, well I guess I have to say that Day 5 was a significant day as well.  I’ll get into that shortly.  In the car class the route consisted of 666km of liaison or transit distance (shown in green below) and included 266km (shown in green below) of timed stage.

Day 5 Route

The profile of the timed stage is shown below.  Except for the run along the ocean there is lots of elevation change.

Day 5 Profile

The significance of Day 5 is that Dakar favorite Sébastien Loeb had his hopes for a victory this year get stuck in a dune. Loeb was forced to withdraw from his third Dakar after spending over two hours stuck in the sand. Co-driver Daniel Elena was too much in pain to start the second special after hurting his tailbone on the descent from a dune.

Leob’s vehicle is shown below.

Loeb’s 2018 Dakar Has Come To An End

Monsieur Dakar, Stephane Peterhansel won today’s stage by almost 5 minutes over Bernhard Ten Brinke in a Toyota.  Giniel De Villiers was third, also in a Toyota.  Peterhansel’s remaining Peugeot teammates, Carlo Sainz finished 4th and Cyril Depres finished 9th over 37 minutes behind Peterhansel.  The day’s top 10 stage results are shown below.

This event has been full of surprises but with Stephane Peterhansel having a 31 minute lead over a teammate it looks like things might start to be locked down despite it only being the end of Day 5.  Sainz in second place is 45 minutes ahead of Ten Brinke.  So it’s hard to justify Sainz pushing too hard as it might be fruitless to try to catch Peterhansel and he is comfortably ahead of Ten Brinke so why risk crashing when he might be “locked” into second place.  The Overall Car Class standings after Day 5/Stage 5 are shown below.
