2018 Dakar Day 4: The Peugeot Team Starts To Dominate

Today was a very meaningful day in the 2018 Dakar.  The route today was a “circular” route where the competitors ended the day at the same place where they started the day.  The Day 4 route is shown below.  The route started out with a 114km transit, shown in green, from San Juan De Marcona to the special stage departure location.  The special timed stage, shown in red, was 330km long with 4 checkpoints.

Day 4 Route

Today the route had a substantial amount of elevation change as shown in the profile below.  The elevations went from 0 to 2,000 meters.  This would be a challenging day and the stage times reflected this challenge.

Day 4 Profile

There were essentially 2 stories today.  One story is how well the Peugeot team did and the other story is how badly everyone else did.  Look at the stage results from today presented below.

Al-Attiyah Had a Bad Day Today

Nasser Al-Attiyah went from one mishap to another on Stage 4 and now lies almost one hour behind general standings leader Stéphane Peterhansel.

“It was a very difficult day. We had two flat tires at the beginning and afterwards we took care because we didn’t have any spares. At the first dunes, we went into a big hole and got stuck for thirty minutes, before it happened a second time. We lost pressure in one of the tires. We tried to put air back in and we were stuck again for thirty or twenty minutes. It was a really difficult day for us. We’re here now at the finish and we’ll see what we can do. We need to push at maximum pace and we’ll see what we can do. It was really not easy. We had two flat tires and then we had to look after the tires for the remaining 220 kilometers. Then just suddenly we got stuck. It was not easy to get out quickly. It was a bad day for us. Nothing is finished, but we will try as from tomorrow. Anything can happen. It’s still a long race.
