Dakar 2018 Day 2: Now It Gets Serious

Today was Day 2 of the 2018 Dakar Rally.  Now the serious Dakar rallying begins.  Today’s rally route was rather simple as there was only 11km of transit driving.  Following that was a 267km long timed stage.  Today’s rally route is shown below.  As can be seen it was mostly a circular route.  This would be good news for the service crews.

Route For Day 2 Of The 2018 Dakar Rally

The profile of today’s route is shown below.  The route went from left to right in the profile.  As can be seen the route was mostly on a plateau with a noticeable climb at the beginning and a valley at about the 3/4 mark of the stage.  Most of the route was sandy.

Day 2 Dakar Rally Route Ground Profile

The 2018 Dakar Day 2 stage winner in the car category was Cyril Depres in his Peugeot.  Depres was a multi-time winner in the motorcycle class, but recently has begun to compete in the Dakar Rally as a car driver.

Cyril Depres Won Stage 2 In The Car Class

After his stage victory Depres said:”I wasn’t expecting something like this… I’m delighted to make it out in one piece. There big, easy to climb dunes as well as very soft plateaus. We saw Carlos, Przygonsky and others stuck in the sand… We wanted to avoid that. Our strength lies in the depth of our field, so we didn’t get all worked up. David did an awesome job navigating, with no backtracking or nasty surprises. It’s great to get a feel for the race. I feel more relaxed now… It’s a good sign!”

Stephane Peterhansel finished second 48 seconds behind Depres, with Sebastien Loeb finishing third, 3 minute 8 seconds behind Depres.  The top ten results in the Car Class are presented below.
