An American Enters A Big Healey In The 2017 Rallye Monte Carlo Historique

In addition to myself, there was one other American resident competing in the 2017 Rallye Monte Carlo Historique.  Adam Lindemann entered a 1961 Austin Healey 3000.  But it wasn’t just an ordinary Austin Healey, this was an original BMC works rally car that also had rally legend Rauno Aaltonen in its ownership history.  Adam’s Austin Healey 3000 is shown below as I saw it at the 2017 Rallye Monte Carlo Historique in Monaco.

Adam Lindemann’s 1961 Austin Healey 3000

The Austin Healey 3000 works rally cars have a distinctive trunk profile which was developed to allow the Healey to carry more than one spare tire.

In their day, the Austin Healey 3000 works rally cars were the dominate rally cars of their time.  There is an interesting story about this particular car in the book entitled “Big Healeys In Competition” by John Baggott.  This 1961 Austin Healey 3000 had been entered into the 1961 Alpine Rally with driver Peter Riley, but it withdrew before finishing because of a crash.

The car was repaired after the Alpine Rally crash and was then acquired by Rauno Aaltonen and taken back to Finland. Except for some ice racing, Rauno could not find a suitable rally class for the Healey in Finland and in 1965 he put the car up for sale.

The advertisement indicating that this car was for sale was noticed by a young student, Caj  Hasselgren.  Young Hasselgren answered the advertisement and he drove to Rauno Aaltonen’s car dealership in Turku, Finland to check the car out.  The following story as told by Caj Hasselgren is copied from “Big Healeys In Competition”:

Caj Hasselgren subsequently bought the car and maintained ownership of it for many years.  I do not know when the car came to be owned by Adam Lindemann.

I did not have an opportunity to talk to Adam Lindemann due to the busy rally schedule and unfortunately for Adam and his navigator Peter Scott, they were forced to retire from the 2017 Rally Monte Carlo Historique before the second timed regularity stage.  This must have been frustrating and disappointing for Adam to be out of the rally so early.

This is an impressive car and I hope that it is seen in future rallies.
