2017 Dakar: Day 11 Results and Standings

Today was the last real day of serious competition at the 2017 Dakar rally.  The Day 12 stage is just a little too short to make up significant time unless someone has a mechanical breakdown.  Today’s total route was 759 kilometers long with 292 kilometers of timed stages.  The Day 11 route is shown below with the cars progressing from left to right on the map.  The route began in San Juan and ended in Rio Cuarto, Argentina.  The green portion of the route are transits and the solid red portion of the route is the timed competitive stage.  The red dashed line is a significant neutralized section.

Day 11 Route

The first part of the Day 11 route appears to be in a rolling portion of the country.  The profile also shows the route moving from left to right.  It is interesting that the neutralized section took the competitors up to the top of a local high point, then they raced down to the finish.

Day 11 Profile

Today two Peugeot drivers, Peterhansel and Loeb, battled it out on the stage.  Loeb gained some time early but had a puncture.  Loeb had been pushing early, but realized that the overall gap between him and Peterhansel was just too large, so he let up to avoid damaging the car.  The third Peugeot driver, Despres, apparently was driving within himself knowing that he could not catch either Peterhansel and Loeb, and knowing that it would be difficult for him to fall back into fourth overall unless he were to get lost, crash, or have a mechanical breakdown.

Terranova and DeVilliers are in the midst of a vigorous battle for 5th and 6th Overall and it showed on the stage today.  Hirvonen got going again today and finished 11th.

The results of the Day 11 stage in the Car Class are presented below.
