2017 Dakar: Day 10 Results and Standings

After a cancelled Stage 9 yesterday the 2017 Dakar rally started in earnest again today.  Today’s route is 751 kilometers long with 449 kilometers of competitive stages.  The Day 10 route is shown below.  The route starts in Chilecito and ends in San Juan, Argentina.  The route travels from left to right on the map with the green portions making up the transits, the solid red  route is timed portion of the day, with the red dashed portion being a neutralized portion of the route. Note that the compass rose does not always have North at the top of these route maps.

The profile of the Day 10 route between the DSS and the ASS is shown below.   The profile progresses from left to right.  There is a substantial amount of elevation change up to the first time control at the start of the neutralized section, while the second portion of the competitive route appears to be rolling.

Day 10 Profile

The first part of the Day 10 route was filled with many navigational challenges.  There were lots of lost cars in the river beds.  Cyril Despres, through good navigation, managed to gain about 6 minutes on Loeb in the first part of the stage, but Loeb found his speed again on the second half and managed to finish second on the stage, about 2 and one half minutes ahead of Despres.  Stefan Peterhansel  stopped to help a motorcyclist with a broken leg, but was given back his lost time and wound up finishing Stage 10 seven and one-half minutes ahead of Loeb.

Hirvonen in his Mini had difficulties on this stage and finished almost five hours behind the leader, Peterhansel.

Today’s great time by Peterhansel now moves him ahead of Loeb in the overall standings.  Despres remains in third place, completing Peugeot’s current filling of the podium.

It looks like the competition is between Peterhansel and Loeb.  It might remain an open competiton for the next stage or two, then I suspect that team orders will come into play.

The overall standings after Day 10 in the car class are presented below.
