Dakar 2017: Day 8 Results And Overall Standings

I was traveling for a few days, so I have gotten a little behind in what is happening at the 2017 Dakar.  The weather has been effecting the Dakar and continues to affect the Dakar.  In the car class the cream is rising to the top, but I fear that team orders might play a part in the 2017 Dakar car class, even earlier than normal for the Dakar.

The Day 8 route is shown below.  The cars will travel from left to right on the map, starting in Uyuni, Bolivia, crossing the Bolivia/Argentina border, and ending in Salta, Argentina.  The green portions of the route are transit sections, while the red portion is the competitive or timed stage.

The weather had a major effect on the Day 8 route which resulted in a route modification outlined below:

The profile of the Day 8 competitive route, before it was modified, is shown below.  The major valley shown in the profile no doubt has flooded rivers.

Today’s stage was dominated by the Peugeot cars with Loeb besting Peterhansel by three and one-half minutes.  Despres is surely developing his Dakar car class skills with a solid third place stage finish, about three minutes ahead of former WRC star Hirvonen in a Mini.

I wonder how much longer Peugeot will let Loeb and Peterhansel will be allowed to push each other?  They will not want one to cause the other to push too hard with a possible crash. Maybe one will be told to drop back a little and pace Despres to help keep his position and therefore fill the podium with Peugeot cars.  We’ll see.  Maybe I’m just over thinking this.
