2017 Dakar: Day 2 Results And Standings

Today was the real start of the 2017 Dakar.  The 275 mile long route began at Resistencia and ended in San Miguel De Tucuman.  This route was rather straight-forward with an emphasis on speed rather than navigation.

Today’s route was relatively flat as can be seen by the route profile shown below.

Today Sébastien Loeb in his Peugeot again showed his ability as a rally car driver winning this stage by well over a minute over runner-up Nasser Al-Attiyah in a Toyota.  In a close race for third and fourth on the stage Carlos Sainz and Giniel de Villiers finished 2 minutes 18 seconds and 2 minutes 19 seconds, respectively behind Loeb.  Perpetual favorite, Stéphane Peterhansel in a Peugeot finished a disappointing 7 minutes behind Loeb.  The top Mini driver was Al Rajhi in 6th position, 5 minutes behind Loeb.

Xavier Pons in a Ford started the 2017 with a second place finish on the first stage, but today the wheels fell off his 2017 Dakar when he lost a rear wheel and had to wait for service assistance to finish the stage.  Seventy-seven cars started today’s second stage and Pons did not have a recorded time in the top 75 cars, so at best, he is hours behind the leaders.  If he is able to continue, then it will be for stage wins, car development, or as a mobile parts car.

Below are the times of the top 10 cars on Stage 2 of the 2017 Dakar rally.

Today’s good finish by Loeb allowed him to inch ahead of Day 1 leader Al-Attiyah by 28 seconds.  In these early stages, that are on non-desert stages, Loeb will be fast.  The other competitors need to be careful not to let Loeb build up too big of a lead before the really off-road stages start.
