A Familiar Lancia Rally Car In The Peking To Paris Motor Challenge

There is an entry in the 2016 Peking To Paris Motor Challenge that is of interest to me.  The American team of Bryon Fusini and Stephen Waudby are entered in a 1955 Aurelia B-12 sedan.  What makes this car of special interest to me is that I saw this car in September 2014 at the Lime Rock Historic Festival.  This car caught my attention at that time because it was clear that this Aurelia B-12 sedan had a long rally history, as shown below.

The Lancia B12 Aurelia first appeared in 1954.  The car featured a 2,266cc V6 engine, which was rather unusual for the time.  The car had a sliding-pillar independent front suspension and rear-mounted four-speed transaxle with the gear shifter located on the steering column.  This was not a high production car with 1,372 being built in 1955 and that year was the high water mark as far as Lancia B12 production.  Production of this car ended in 1956.

This car is a good selection for a rally car as it gives most of the performance of the sportier Aurelia B20 but at a much lower cost.

This car, when I saw it less than two years ago, already had been strengthened for marathon rallying.  Simply, you can not pay too much attention to the undercarriage of these marathon cars.  Everything needs to be replaced, reinforced and then bring along spares.  Despite the previous preparation of this car, plus any recent improvements, the crew at this year’s Peking To Paris Motor Challenge are currently having a problem with a blown shock absorber.

The Undercarriage Has Been Upgraded For Rallying

The Lancia V6 engine was one of the first production V6 engines in the world.  In its standard condition this engine put out about 90 horsepower.

The Lancia B12 Aurelia has a relatively simple dash as shown below.  The radio on the passenger’s side appears to be an after-market unit.  This particular car was built for the English market as indicated by the right-hand drive position of the steering wheel.  The column mounted shifter can also be seen.

The Lancia Has A 4-Speed Column-Mounted Transmission

The rally decals on the side window shows that the car has a long rally history even before this year’s Peking TO Paris Motor Challenge.  Some of these rallies go back over 17 years!  When I saw the car in September 2014, the interior of the car appeared to have been restored back from its rallying heydays.

Window Decals Reveal The Car’s Rally History

At the display at the Lime Rock Historic Festival, the owner of the car at that time included some photos of the car in its previous rallies.  This was very impressive.  Shortly after the 2014 Lime Rock Historic Festival, this car came up for sale.  I suppose that is when the current owner bought the car.  Now the car is competing in the 2016 Peking To Paris Motor Challenge, thus adding another chapter to the story of its long rally history.

    That’s me driving through Stanhope Ford on the Rally of the Tests in the UK in that last picture ….the things you find on the internet… I also took the car on the Classic Marathon, London to Prague, both events around 2001.
