Dakar 2016 Day 13: Peterhansel Gets The Overall Win!

Dakar 2016 is over and Peugeot has won in just their second year of entry.  Peugeot had the fastest cars and a fast driver lineup.  Despite this, the event was a nail biter for them as they saw a dominant leading position after the first few days start to dwindle away, however they were able to manage the gap to the following cars and get victory.  Overall well done Peugeot!

The final day route was somewhat long, but also somewhat tame.  There was a lot of transit at 518km as shown in the green route below, but the competitive special stage was only 181km.

Not only was the day 13 route rather short, it was not particularly tough either.  The profile shown below.

As anticipated, Peterhansel took a careful approach to today’s stage.  Perterhansel finished 13th today, but really only lost 7 minutes to the leader.  This was in part due to the short stage length.  On the longer stages, being 7 minutes behind the leader might get you a 6th place finish.

The day 13 stage results are shown below.  Loeb continued to show that he is the real deal at Dakar.  Hirvonen in his Mini was fast today, but not fast enough to take third place overall away from De Villiers.  Al-Attiyah, also in a Mini, finished the day just a few seconds behind Hirvonen.  I suspect that next year Al-Attiyah will be back in a Peugeot – one way or another.  He knows Peugeot is the fast machine and he is fast enough and wealthy enough to sit wherever he wants.

It is interesting to note that Loeb’s co-driver Daniel Elena is entered as a driver in the upcoming Rallye Monte Carlo Historique, where he has been a top competitor.  The contrast in weather is dramatic between the Dakar and the mountains north of Monte Carlo.

I think that all of the manufacturers can find something to be happy about.  Obviously Peugeot won and have the fastest cars.  Mini put 4 cars in the top 10 finishers, including a second place finish overall. Toyota has shown that they have a competitive car, took a third place finish and put 3 cars in the top 10.  However the Peugeot cars are faster and these manufacturers are going to have to find more speed if they want to win.  Robby Gordon’s ride in his Gordini just can’t get the job done.  This vehicle needs to be re-engineered or retired.
