Dakar 2016 Day 9:

Clarifying some unfinished business from yesterday, I had speculated that Robby Gordon had some serious mechanical difficulties on the special stage and that the reason Sheldon Creed had not shown up at the finish was that he had loaned key parts to Robby.  Well it turns out that they both had serious problems independently.  Both had a very bad Day 8.  I am not sure if Sheldon Creed even started Day 9.

Day 9 had a circular route that started and ended in Belen, Argentina.  The day started off with a 50 – 60km transit to the start of a 285km special stage, however the stage was cut short, about 100km short due to high temperatures.  After the stop the cars transitted back to Belen.  The planned route is shown below.

The day’s profile did not look too scary compared to some other days.  The Day 9 profile is shown below.

Day 9 continued a short bad streak for Peugeot.  Sure Peugeot won the stage, but they were only 10 seconds ahead of Van Loon in a Mini, 17 seconds ahead of Hirvonen also in a Mini, and 38 seconds ahead of DeVilliers in a Toyota.  Hardly the dominant days of the recent past for Peugeot.  Even Sebestien Loeb with his repaired Peugeot could only manage a 13th place finish.  Perhaps the Peugeot Team forgot to go to church on the Sunday off day!

Peugeot still remains in the prime seats to win the Dakar Rally in 2016, but things don’t look quite so good as they did several days ago.  The team is vulnerable, just like all teams, and clearly the Minis are prepared to fill any voids left by the Peugeot Team.

Sainz is going to have to be at the top of his game for the next couple of days because my guess is that Al-Attiyah smells blood in the water and he is going to be pushing hard – maybe too hard, but Al-Attiyah will not go down without putting up a strong effort.
