Dakar Rally Day 5 Results: Peugeot Continues To Show The Way

To follow-up on a point that I discussed yesterday, the penalty of 1 hour 4 minutes is still listed against Robby Gordon.  Apparently it was for a speeding violation on Day 2.  Based on an interview that I saw with Robby Gordon, they have requested an appeal of this penalty.  There seems to be no argument about the facts, but they are appealing the severity of the penalty.

Today’s stage is essentially an extension of yesterday’s stage as the competitors cars were parked in a closed area after yesterday’s run and the only work that could be done on the vehicles had to be performed by the in-car crew.

Today’s stage took the competitors out of San Salvador De Jujuy on a transit that involved crossing the border into Bolivia.  Shortly after entering Bolivia, the competitors began the 327km special stage for Day 5.  The route for Day 5 is shown below.

Day 5 Route

As with yesterday today’s route took place a high elevation, all over 3,500m above sea level.  From the profile there did seem to be a lot of elevation change in today’s route.

The Peugeot team continued to dominate the stages in the 2016 Dakar Rally.  Today Peugeot cars finished 1-2-3, with Loeb leading the way.  Loeb and Sainz were only 22 seconds apart with Peterhansel 3 minutes back.  The Peugeot team certainly has demonstrated that they have the speed.

The results from Day 5 are shown below.  Except for Al-Attiyah the other teams are have difficulty keeping up with the Peugeot.

Loeb continues to lead the rally and it looks like it is going to be hard to overcome his lead on the road.  Robby Gordon languished in 24th position most due to the major penalty, however even with the penalty removed, he would still be in 11th or 12th position with a deficit of over 40 minutes to the leader.  That is a long way back.
