This past week I was sent an article that was published in the May 1997 issue of Motor Sport about Denis Jenkinson’s ride at Mille Miglia in 1955 with Stirling Moss in a Mercedes-Benz 300SLR when Moss set the record time for that event.
First Page Of Jenk’s Article In Motor Sport
A small note on the front page of the May 1997 article says that it was first published in Motor Sport in 1955. Motor Sport is an old, very well-respected motoring magazine that has served and informed motor sports enthusiasts since 1924.
I have included the full story of Denis Jenkinson’s ride with Stirling Moss in the 1955 Mille Miglia in the following file. It is a very interesting read.
In recent post I included a photo that I took of Moss’ Mercedes-Benz 300SLR at the Mercedes-Benz Museum. Jenkinson’s article includes many pictures of the Moss Mercedes-Benz 300SLR, but I wanted to show some color photos of this car, so rather than present more pictures of the Moss car I have included a couple of pictures of the same car that Moss/Jenkinson drove, except the car shown below was driven by Juan Manuel Fangio, who did not take a co-driver/navigator with him in the 1955 Mille Miglia.
Fangio finished second to Moss in the 1955 Mille Miglia, about one half hour behind. Jenkinson mentions American driver John Fitch in the article as a possible driver for the Mercedes-Benz team in the 1955 Mille Miglia. Fitch did drive a works Mercedes-Benz 300SL gullwing coupe in the 1955 Mille Miglia to fifth place overall and first place in the GT Class.
