2015 Dakar Rally – Day 5 Results

Today Stage 5 was fully in Chile for the first time this year.  The route goes through areas that have now become legendary since the Dakar rally moved to South America – Atacama and Antofagasta.

Stage 5 was made up of 174 kilometers of competitive distance and 485 kilometers of transit section.  This was a very mountainous stage with much of the competitive distance taking place at elevation of 2,000 to 3,000 meters above sea level.

Stage 5 is shown below.  The transit sections are shown is green and the 174 kilometers of competitive route is shown in red.

Yesterday I said that it looked like some new names were running in the top ten in the Car Class.  Today’s results seem to back that up as a relatively unknown team, Vasilyev and Zhiltsov (it sounds like a Russian ice hockey defense pairing) in a Mini won Stage 5, only 20 seconds ahead of another rookie team, Alrajhi and Gottsschalk, in a Toyota.

In another surprise, Robby Gordon did not have any problems and finished third on Stage 5, 2 minutes ahead of overall leader Nasser Al-Attiyah.  Al-Attiyah will be happy with that result as getting beat by Robby Gordon means nothing, but what was important is that he finished 2 minutes 20 seconds ahead of Devilliers, who was in sixth position on Stage 5.
