2015 Dakar Rally Daily Highlights On TV In The USA

Once again this year, the NBC Sports Network will be broadcasting the daily highlights from the Dakar Rally.  Unfortunately there will be a significant delay in this broadcast.  The first show will be on the NBC Sports Network at 4:30 PM on Monday, January 5.  This half-hour TV program will show the highlights from the day before, Sunday January 4.  At least this is scheduled time here on the east coast of the USA on the Comcast cable network that serves my area.

Perhaps those of you who have satellite TV will be able to find a more current or longer Dakar Rally TV show.  It is also possible that there might be some available live-feed.  If anyone can find these shows or information sources, then please let me know and I’ll pass it on to others via this website.  My email address is: shanna12 at comcast dot net

It’s Hard Enough Just Riding The Motorcycle In The Dakar, Never Mind Doing The Navigation and Timing As Well!

While I have fond memories of Toby Moody doing the Dakar TV shows, NBC’s Leigh Diffey has done a good job in the last two years and I expect that he will be asked again to host the NBCSN Dakar TV show.

As much as my schedule permits, I will be posting daily Dakar reports on the Car and Bike Classes on this website, based on information that I am able to obtain.  Frankly, the Quad and big Truck Classes don’t much interest me.

One thing that I notice on Robby Gordon’s driving suit is the lack of major sponsor badges.  This is not a good sign, as racing in the Dakar Rally is not cheap.

Thank you for doing this, I too am interested in other ways to follow this incredible journey of these gladiators, 30 minutes one day delayed is simply not enough coverage, the organizers need to do something to reach out to fans in the US, it seems as the coverage has dwindled every year.

    • Hi Demis,
I think that this event is very marketable on television. The scenery is spectacular, the event is dramatic, and the stories are real. None of the phony scripting like so many of the so-called “reality” shows on television. If people see this event, they can easily become hooked. Showing an event at 4:30PM (east coast time) is not the best time to show a program in order to build an audience.

    Steve,
I picked up HDTV from our local cable company just to watch the Dakar. So far so good, except Robby has already run into his annual reliability issues.
The motorcycle pic reminds me of my early enduro days, when I had a cheap timex watch inside a spray paint can lid (with a magnifying glass on top to read the small digits), a mechanical odo and a route holder with the turn instructions rolled up inside. Of course, everyone uses a computer now (takes the real “skill” out of it 🙂 )

    • Hi Ron,
The pictures from the Dakar are spectacular! If this event was shown during prime time, it would be much more popular just due to the photography.
With regard to the navigation equipment that the Bike Class riders use, I think that they should get all of the help that they can get. The event is very difficult for the bike riders. The car competitors get to sit in the shade with cool suits and probably AC blown into their helmets.

For future reference: advrider.com’s Dakar Rally event coverage ‘firehose’ [huge amount of info, pics, links and more links, world-wide TV schedules and coverage, streaming, etc] is your bivouac for the kind of coverage you are hungry for. The thread is active all year, but really starts to pick up about late Nov, on thru to, weeks apres the podium. The hardcore enthusiasts stay glued to their computers all day, everyday, in real-time. You can relive the blow-by-blow of this years Rally RIGHT NOW- if you have a week to spare. Luckily, they have the “Cliff Notes” version. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1034277 http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1034488 http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1034501
