One of the most prestigious car events in the USA is the Colorado Grand. This is a tour takes place every year in Colorado and attracts car owners with 1960 and earlier sports and race cars of distinction. The event covers about 1000 miles in five days. This year’s Colorado Grand will be held from September 8 – 13, 2014. Recently I was able to acquire a Route Book from the 2005 running of the Colorado Grand.

I was interested in getting a copy of this route book to get an idea of the type of instructions that are provided for such an event.
The route book for the Colorado Grand is much more than simple instructions for following the course of the tour. For example, it has a complete listing of the competitors and photos of almost all of the cars that are taking part. The following is a partial list of the competitors and their cars from the 2005 Colorado Grand.
Competitors And Their Cars From The 2005 Colorado Grand
I recognize a few of the names on the list of competitors above. Mark Gessler in Car 36 was the navigator in one of the top finishers in the 2014 Mille Miglia. Stan Gold in Car 44 was a competitor (also in a Porsche) in the 2013 Peking to Paris Motor Challenge.
The Route Book provides an overall map of each day’s route to give the competitors an overall view of the route. An example a daily route map is shown below.

In addition to the route map, the Route Book provides instructions, with distances presented to the 1/10 mile, to each turn. The detailed instructions for the first part of Day 1, correlating to the map above, are provided below.
Detailed Route Instructions For A Portion Of Day 1
Note that in addition to the information necessary to follow the route, the route book also provides some interesting additional information about many of the places that the rally passes through.
Not many of us will get an opportunity to take part in the Colorado Grand, so I thought that it might be interesting to get some idea of how this event takes place.
