The 2014 Ohio Winter Rally will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2014 in Solon, Ohio. The actual start location will be at DiBella’s Subs, 30050 Aurora Rd. (SR 43), Solon, Ohio 44139. The route will take competitors over approximately 130 miles of rural roads in the Lake Erie “snowbelt” counties of northeast Ohio. The rally’s difficulty will be dictated by prevailing road and weather conditions. Competitors should come prepared to spend extended periods of time outside in severe winter conditions.
This winter the weather has been both warm and then very cold, so it is very difficult to predict the road conditions at the time of the rally. The area where the Ohio Winter Rally will be held is subject to lake effects snowfall coming off Lake Erie. I competed in this rally a couple of years ago and it was quite snowy. One car slipped off the road at a control when they got too close to a snow-filled ditch when stopping at the control.
The Ohio Winter Rally competitors can expect an absolutely straightforward, gimmick-free time-speed-distance (TSD) road rally. The emphasis will be on precise timing at well-placed controls. The rallymaster, Greg Lester, is a very experienced rally competitor and knows how to put on a great rally.
The Ohio Winter Rally is the second round of the 2014 Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Great Lakes Division Rally Championship and will count toward the SCCA National Touring Rally Championship (Regional Rally).
The entry fees for the Ohio Winter Rally are $35/car before early entry cutoff, $45/car thereafter for members of the Sports Car Club of America. For non-members the entry fee is $40/car before early entry cutoff, $50/car thereafter. This entry fee includes the nationally mandated SCCA weekend membership (which entitles the purchaser to a discounted annual membership for a limited time – see www.scca.org for details).
