This week I was pleased to add another finisher’s medal from the Canadian Winter Rally to my collection of Canadian Winter Rally memorabilia. I was able to obtain a finisher’s medal from the 1956 running of the Canadian Winter Rally.
1956 Canadian Winter Rally Finisher’s Medal
This 1956 medal is in rougher shape than the others that I have which might be because it is a little older than the others and possibly it spent some time decorating someone’s front license plate.
I now have Canadian Winter Rally finisher’s medals from 1956, 1963, 1968, 1969, 1970, and 1971. The medals from 1963 to 1971 have a look that is substantially different from the 1956 medal. The photo below shows both the 1956 medal and the 1963 medal.
Comparison Between 1956 and 1963 Canadian Winter Rally Finisher’s Medals
Note that in 1963, the word “International” was engraved in the outside ring in the place where “Finisher” is in the 1956 medal. There are some other slight differences such as the white background for the maple leaf in 1963 compared to the “gold” background in the 1956 medal.
In addition to the finisher’s medals, I also have several licence plates from the Canadian Winter Rally as well. This was a major rally event in Canada, especially in the 1960s, and I was pleased to be able to add another finisher’s medal to my collection. Perhaps I’ll be able to find even more memorabilia from this rally in the next few years.
