Day 2 of the 2013 Dakar Rally is now complete. Stage 2 was the first “real” stage in the 2013 Dakar Rally and in the car class the cream is rising to the top. Stage 2 was won by Stephane Peterhansel in his Mini by a margin of just over 2 minutes in front of South African Gerrard De Villiers in his Toyota.
I had hoped to see Robby Gordon close up on the leaders, but that did not happen. He finished about 19 minutes behind Peterhansel due to navigational issues and now lies about 49 minutes behind the leader in the overall ranking. As Robby Gordon said: “We’ve almost screwed this rally.”
A Mini In Action!
Many of the car competitors were complaining about the GPS which did not seem to work properly at some of the waypoints. The competitors claim that they lost time looking for the waypoint. Given the number of competitors that had navigational issues on Stage 2, I think that there must have been a fundamental problem somewhere.

Overall Stephane Peterhansel is in first place overall. At this point in the Dakar Rally effectively the drivers in the top 10 ovverall position are tied, as a 15 minute gap is not particularly significant. Robby Gordon has moved his ranking from 136th place to 29th place, however he has dropped to about 49 minutes behing the leader. This is starting to becoming troublesome for him.

Cyril Despres did not have a top 10 finish in today’s stage as he got lost on the stage, but he has a history of having a slow start. He is about 10 minutes behind the leader in the Overall standings.
The American rider, Caselli, who is riding Marc Coma’s bike due to an injury preventing Coma from riding had a great Stage 2 finishing 5th.

Stage 3 of the 2013 Dakar Rally will be a total of 213 miles from Pico to Nazca. Of that total about 151 miles will be timed over the dunes.
Robby Gordon can not afford anymore self-inflicted errors and needs to start to reduce his time behind the leader.
