2013 Dakar Rally Gets Underway Today

Today the 2013 Dakar Rally is getting underway.  I’m sure that it will be another great rally event.  I have been sent some photos from the event via Twitter that provides a flavor of the event at the starting line.

As you can see from the photo below, the organizers have set up quite a starting podium.  It seems that the 2013 Dakar Rally is the big story in Lima.  In fact, the president of Peru was at the starting line today.

A Look At The Starting Podium

Last year’s winner, Stephane Peterhansel, will be back with the Mini team.  He is always near the top of the standings at the finish of the Dakar Rally.

In addition to Stephane Peterhansel and the rest of the Mini Team,  the Team Red Bull Buggies will be very competitive with Carlos Sainz and Nasser Al Attiyah teamed up once again.  This was a fiery relationship in the past, but they both should do well.  I think that these buggies will be fast.

I expect another charge from Robby Gordon through the field, but bad luck and mechanical difficulties always seem to bite Robby.  It would be better if Robby had a supporting team entry.  Perhaps he can make some sort of arrangement with another competitor to provide some limited support.  If Robby Gordon does not do well, it won’t be from a lack of trying.  I love his competitive spirit.

I will have some results from the first day of the 2013 Dakar Rally early tomorrow morning.
