The 2012 Formula 1 season got underway today at the Albert Park track in Melbourne, Australia. This year is interesting as 6 of the 24 drivers are drivers who have won a Formula 1 World Drivers Championship. Of course, this early in the season, the performance of the cars is still a big unknown.
The race conditions were clear, sunny, and warm. The race did start around 5:00PM local time, so there were some shadows on the track towards the end of the race.
The two HRT-Cosworth cars were not allowed to start because they did not post a qualfying time that was within 107% of the best time. As a result only 22 cars started today’s race.
In the end Jenson Button drove a good race in a fast McLaren racecar to win the first race of the season. Vettel finished second in his Red Bull and benefited from an appearance of the Safety Car which he used to his advantage to pass Hamilton’s McLaren. Weber finished fourth.
Jenson Button Wins the 2012 Australian Grand Prix
The early weekend promise of good pace from the Mercedes Team was not present during the race. I think that they have a fast car if they can get all of their mechanical issues sorted out.
It looks like the Ferrari team has got some performance issues to sort out if they are going to be competitive this year.
The complete results of the 2012 Australian Grand Prix are as follows:
|2||Sebastian Vettel||Red Bull Racing-Renault|
|4||Mark Webber||Red Bull Racing-Renault|
|10||Paul di Resta||Force India-Mercedes|
|13||Pastor Maldonado||Williams-Renault||Off Course|
|22||Nico Hulkenberg||Force India-Mercedes||Accident|
|23||Pedro de la Rosa||HRT-Cosworth||DNS|
Kimi Raikkonen had a very good return to Formula 1 by finishing 7th in his Lotus.
The next Formula 1 race will be the Malaysian Grand Prix to be held next weekend.
