Robby Gordon is very serious about winning the Dakar this year. This year he selected as his team mate in the other Hummer last year’s overall winner, Nasser Al Attiyah, with Lucas Cruz doing the co-driving. Until signing on with Team Robby Gordon, Al Attiyah did not have ride in Dakar this year as Volkswagen withdrew its Dakar program in order to pursue its World Rally Championship program. The Qatari driver along with Robby Gordon will be a powerful combination. It should be very interesting with these two drivers on the same team. Both have big personalities. Last year Al Attiyah had a very strained relationship with his Volkswagen team mate Carlos Sainz.
While Nasser Al Attiyah has won Dakar, Robby Gordon’s best finish was in 2009 when he finished third behind the Race Touareg VWs of Giniel De Villiers and American Mark Miller.
Nasser Al Attiyah Will Strengthen the Robby Gordon Team
Nasser Al Attiyah will have his Hummer painted in Qatari colors. He is proud of his home country, Qatar, and will also represent Qatar in the Olympics later this year in the shooting competition. In addition, I understand that Al Attiyah will have a ride in the World Rally Championship events this year.
I still don’t know if the Dakar will be on the television here in the USA for 2012. Last year Versus TV showed the Dakar. I contacted Versus TV to ask them if the Dakar would be shown on TV in 2012, but they have not responded. It is complicated this year as Versus TV will become the NBC Sports Network at the first of the year. I did see a listing for the Dakar on the NBC Sports Network for Monday January 2, 2012 at 1:30PM, so there is a glimmer of hope that the Dakar will be on TV again this year.
