Entries Closed Early for the 2012 Dakar Rally

Entry for the 2012 Dakar Rally has been closed for cars and trucks two weeks ahead of the planned entry closure date.  This early closure was due to the large number of entries that had reached the field limit of 175 cars and 75 trucks.  The follows an already closed entry period for bikes and quads!

In addition to the larger number of entrants into the Dakar Rally as compared to last year, rally officials have noted a broader range of nationalities of Dakar entrants.  I did notice that last year, not surprisingly, that there were a large number of South American entries, particularly in the motorcycle class. Apparently the entries this year indicate a return of European riders and drivers to the Dakar Rally.  In addition to the broader range of entries, the number of new entrants in the Dakar Rally, is more than 25% in the motorcycle class.  Up to this time, the Dakar Rally has not attracted significant North American entries.  Perhaps this will change for the 2012 Dakar Rally.

Rally officials have stated that the full list of the Dakar Rally competitors and the rally route details will be published on November 8.

The Dakar Rally will start on January 1, 2012 in Mar del Plata in Argentina, with the finish line being in Lima, Peru after traveling through Chile.  For me, the Dakar Rally is one of the highlights of the winter.  I hope that Versus TV again televises the daily Dakar Rally summaries.  When I see any news about television coverage of the 2012 Dakar Rally, I will include it on this website.
