Alcan 5000 Rally Goes North in February 2012

On Friday night, October 21, I had the pleasure of having dinner with the Alcan 5000 organizers Jerry and Colleen Hines as well as Bob Vogel who will be competing in the Alcan 5000 Rally in 2012.

Colleen and Jerry are fine folks and I very much enjoyed talking to with them and finding more out about this rally.  They have been putting the event on for a number of years and are very knowledgeable about the roads and facilities between Seattle and the Arctic Circle.

The 2012 Alcan 5000 Rally will be held from February 23 to March 3, 2012.  The rally will begin in Kirkland, WA and end in Anchorage, Alaska just in time to watch the start of the famous Iditarod dog race.  The rally will be about 4,400 miles long and will include 230 miles of ice roads along with three slaloms events.

A map of the 2012 Alcan 5000 Rally route is shown below.

The 2012 running of the Alcan 5000 Rally is the 24th anniversary of the first Alcan event in 1988.  Typically the Alcan 5000 is run every two years, alternating between a summer event and a winter event.  As a result, the next event following the 2012 running will be a summer rally in 2014, with the next winter Alcan 5000 in 2016.

For further details about the rally and to get entry information, check out the website linked below, but hurry as winter is coming.

Bob Vogel of Falmouth, Massachusetts is has entered this event with his MINI.  Bob had his MINI at the restaurant and he has been making good progress getting the car ready.  This will be a long event for Bob who will be driving his car all across the USA to the start in Kirkland, WA, then compete in the Alcan 5000 rally, then drive back home.  I believe that Bob said that his total driving distance was going to be about 11,000 miles!

In order to create more storage space for the Alcan 5000 rally gear, luggage, and supplies that he will take, Bob has removed the back seat of the MINI.  By doing this Bob has significantly increased the useable space in the MINI.

The Alcan 5000 will be quite an adventure, as well as a challenging rally.  It is an event worth of a car guy’s bucket list.
