Critical Qualifying Results Establishes 2011 Monaco Grand Prix Grid

Today the qualifying runs for the 2011 Monaco Grand Prix were held through the classic street circuit in Monte Carlo.  Due to the difficulty in passing on this street circuit, a good qualifying result is critical to a good finish in this race.

The two HRT cars did not set a qualifying time during Q1 and apparently just as well as their previous practice times indicated that they would not qualify based on having lap times greater than 107% of the fastest time.

During Q3 there was a bad accident where Sergio Perez of the Sauber team hit a tire wall with the car sideways just past the exit of the tunnel.  This caused the Q3  qualifying session to be red flagged with 2 minutes 26 seconds left in the session.  This appeared to be a very serious hit.  At this time, I do not know the condition of Sergio Perez, but obviously we all hope that he is OK.  The initial reports are positive, but it seems likely that he will not be racing tomorrow.

For some strange reason it sounds like the track is quite rough in some place as a result of speed bumps and/or removal of speed bumps.  I know that this race takes place on public roads, but putting speed bumps along these roads seems very strange to me.

When the Q3 resumed the drivers really did not have a sufficient time to put together a really good hot lap.  This resulted in Lewis Hamilton, who had waited in the pit during the early stages of this sesssion, having a rather poor starting position for him.

The results of qualifying for the 2011 Monaco Grand Prix to set the grid for the race are as follows:
