Volvo Rally Car to be Auctioned at H&H Auctions

This weekend H&H Auctions will be having a classic car auction in Stoneleigh Park in the UK.  It’s always interesting to see what cars sell for overseas.  One of the cars that caught my eye that will be offered for sale is a 1963 Volvo PV544 rally car.

1963 Volvo PV544 Rally Car

Apparently this PV544 has taken part in the following rallies: 1992 Venetie Van Het Noorden; 1993 Grand Atlas Rally Paris Marathon; 1994 Monte Carlo Challenge and the 1995 Liege-Sofia-Liege”. The listing says that the engine has been bored to approximately 1990cc and fitted with M-Sport cylinder head, racing camshaft, big diameter headers and twin Weber 45DCOE carburetors all supposedly producing around 140bhp.  Others features are a reinforced suspension with additional stabilizers and stronger / adjustable Koni shock absorbers; Girling disc brakes and adjustable handbrake, high-output alternator; Momo steering wheel; Recaro front seats with four-point harnesses; rollcage with side bars; body lightened where possible; dashboard-mounted `press in’ fuses; Plexiglass rear and side windows; 100-litre fuel tank; rear seat replaced by aluminum storage box and additional reversing light, roof-mounted spot light and wide-beam driving lights.

H&H have estimated the selling price at 10,000 – 12,000 British pounds.  We’ll see what the bidders say.

Hi Steve, I just bought that car at the fair in Padova. If you have some further Info of its history pls let me know
    best regards
    Heimo

    • Hi Heimo,
Congratulations! I was very impressed with this car when I saw it advertised for sale more than six years ago and I’m sure that it is still an impressive car. I do not have any more information about the car at this time. I suspect that I did have a little more information about this car back in February 2011 when I posted about it, but that information has now disappeared. I would appreciate hearing more about the car at this time and being brought up to date on its recent history. What are your plans for this car? Enjoy the car!

Hi Steve, this is now my third Oldtimer, the others are a MG TF 1953 and a Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV 1969. These cars I only drive in summer, but with the Volvo we will do some winter challenges as Planai Classic in January 2018. The car is in a pretty good condition, some work has to be done, but nothing serious. I will Keep you informed.
        Heimo

      • Hi Heimo, you certainly have good tastes in cars! The Planai Classic would indeed be a good venue for the Volvo. Please do keep me informed about the Volvo and your adventures with the other cars as well. It would be an interesting followup story on my original post.

Hello Heimo, this is Erik, Stefan just told me that you bought this car as I own a nice Amazon 122S with some modifications and aproximately 130HP, however, concratulation and welcome to historic Volvo car owners in Graz. I did all modifications by myself and know quite a lot about specs and parts of the old Volvo staff, I also told Stefan that you should check if the car does also have a limited slip differential, that was quite seldom bur available at Volvo Motorsport in original Rally cars., still available at Quaife or so…, I unserstood the car was rebuild in Switzerland in the 90’s…, in Switzerland there is Leo Möckl as a historic Volvo expert, maybe he knows more about the car 😉 just get in contact with him via http://www.volvotuner.ch/wordpress/…, good luck with the car and on thr Planai classic, looking Forward to a common ride Amazon vs 544 Rally in near future…., as Long there is no salt on streets I run mine and I assume we are nor far away in St Veit…, have fun! br, Erik
